Robert Picardo on Sci-Fi Buzz

The following are comments that Robert Picardo made (in early 1997) on the Sci-Fi Channel's "Sci-Fi Buzz" regarding his Star Trek: Voyager character, the Holographic Doctor.

"I like to think of myself as an optimistic paranoid. I'm not saying that I'm... I'm not apessimistic paranoid. I'm a very positive, optimistic... paranoid personality!"

"He's part of that tradition of having the ability to be not human, but sort of aspiring to be human, and having certain human qualities. So he provides that point of view. I think he also makes the audience feel better. They go, 'Gee, at least I'm not as screwed up as that guy. At least I got a personality.'"

"I was the kind of actor that people would walk on the street and they'd go, 'There's the guy who put my storm windows in' or 'That's the guy who works at my bank.' They knew they knew my face, they didn't know why. Now... and it may just be the pointy sideburns... but I'm getting a lot more recognition now for this character than I ever have in my previous twenty years as an actor."

"There's something about my sense of humor that has appealed to the writers, and I think they have written to that strength in me. I have made a bit of a cottage industry out of playing characters that initially you dislike, but that you grow to like in spite of their obvious problems and foibles."

"I enjoy playing this character a lot, but as an actor I've enjoyed playing a realm of characters. So I certainly hope that I'll have the opportunity to play other roles in the future. Maybe even use some of my old hairpieces, which are languishing on the shelf right now, as we're speaking."
